1. Coordinate color - pick a theme and coordinate colors in your home according to that theme. Say, you like autumn. In this theme you use earthy colors such as orange, browns, dark red and green to create a warm and autumn-like look in your home. Pay special attention to the draperies and curtains. You need not refurbish your sofa to match these colors; just make a cover for it and add as many tiny cushions you can.

2. Coordinate furniture - some rooms look great with a woody look, some look lovely with Spartan wrought iron furniture. Choose the material you like and go for it. To obtain a woody look in your home you need spend a fortune on timber finish; just get high quality plywood and place panels where needed to give your home a rich and warm look.

3. Coordinate indoor props - you would have always appreciated the superb show pieces in luxury homes. You can create similar effects with the help of light and inexpensive items such as indoor plants, mini water fountains, aquariums, abstract paintings, and so on.

You are a connoisseur of arts but cannot afford any masterpieces? Relax. Buy poster of your favorite painting of Picasso, Van Gogh, Da Vinci and so on and put in a rich looking frame (you would be amazed what you can get in ceramics and fiber) and voila you have a wow house at tiny fraction of the original cost.

4. Put in rugs and carpets - sometimes it looks good to have bare wood floor. However, for a change try covering your floor with soft warm colored rugs. It would completely change the look of your home. It would be like you have lighted a fire in the hearth and you feel the warmth seeping out caressing you.

5. Get aromatic candles - smell is something we often ignore but has tremendous impact on our senses. When you remember the best things about your childhood, you would invariably remember something very soothing associated with smells in the kitchen. Put in vanilla essence candles or lavender and see the difference it makes to the overall ambiance in your home.
